As a Senior Staff Attorney for The Hartford, you will join a collaborative environment where you will have direct contact with our Claims Professionals while working from home! Our in-house, remote work opportunity is well-suited for an experienced attorney who is dedicated to the practice of law and committed to excellent customer service! We are looking for a colleague with a strong background in civil litigation defending cases to include Premises Liability, Products Liability, and Commercial and Personal Motor Vehicle, and other civil litigation.
Knowledge and experience in Workers’ Compensation is a plus.
The Attorney will work remotely and make appearances throughout the state of West Virginia.
The Senior Staff Attorney will manage the following key responsibilities: • Analyze complex legal and factual issues, conduct extensive, well-reasoned legal research • Independently create and present defense strategies on behalf of clients • Prepare complex pleadings, written discovery, depositions, motions and briefs in support of defense strategies independently, with minimal supervision • Partner with our Claims Partners to achieve the best results for our Hartford insureds • Provide effective and timely communications, information, legal advice and other services to clients on legal and factual issues • Communicate with the court, witnesses, opposing counsel and co-counsel with professional diplomacy and discretion • Facilitate prompt, efficient and effective disposition of assigned cases • Independently prepare and present witnesses and evidence at trials, hearings, arbitrations and alternative dispute resolutions • Research, draft, file and argue substantive motions on behalf of clients • Facilitate in-house training to Claims Partners • Provide opinions to Managing Attorney, staff, clients, and claims customers • Attend continuing legal education seminars in order to maintain high level of professional expertise.
WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR? • Minimum of 7 years of legal practice experience handling tort defense cases in the state of West Virginia • JD from accredited law school and license to practice in the state of West Virginia (Virginia Bar license a plus) • First-chair jury trial experience is strongly preferred • Positive-minded and collaborative team-player attitude • Strong legal research and writing skills • Solid MS Office proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook) • Lexis Nexis experience a plus • Self-directed with excellent organizational and prioritization skills • Strong computer skills and the ability to quickly leverage new software as required WHAT ELSE CAN YOU TELL ME? This position is a remote work position; the selected candidate will travel for appearances within the state of West Virginia.

Compensation The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market.
Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role.
The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees.
Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition.
